OVAL PORTRAITS

by Puck Verheul

The series «Oval Portraits» by Puck Verheul, consists of photogravures and toyobo etchings pressed on art paper, subjecting nostalgia and archived avant-garde reverberated in phantom worlds. Narrating on "what might have been", the images embody new interpretations of scantly documented early garments of four Belgian designers: Lieve van Gorp, Olivier Theyskens, Ann Demeulemeester, and A.F. Vandevorst.

The chapter devoted to A.F. Vandevorst has been co-created with STOF from Antwerp, harmonizing their significant silhouettes. The light-sensitive metal plates utilized for this type of print production extend the exclusiveness and perishability of the portrayed memorabilia.

Drawing from Edgar Allan Poe's 1842 horror tale "The Oval Portrait", each portrait becomes a divergence with time. The dark corners of the images, akin to vignettes of ink, suggest a sense of remembrance and preciousness. The story reflects on a fascination with the macabre and explores an idea where the garments within carry the score of lives lived, primed for lives to come.
